MCLEANSBORO [mdash] Phyllis Ellen Cantrell, 70, of McLeansboro, passed away 8:04 a.m. Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Larry Woodrow officiating. As per her wishes, Phyllis' body will be cremated and her ashes buried next to her husband Kenneth at a later date by her family. She was born Oct. 24, 1946, in Bridgeport, the daughter of Clayton D. Jones. She married Kenneth Deon Cantrell on March 7, 1965, at Webb's Chapel Methodist Church in McLeansboro; he passed away April 5, 2016. She was a homemaker. She loved working on crafts and cooking for her husband and grandchildren. Phyllis attended schools in Hamilton County and graduated with the Class of 1964. She was very interested in genealogy and an avid reader. She is survived by one daughter, Candice Cantrell of McLeansboro; one son, Doug Cantrell and wife Andrea of McLeansboro; one sister, Joy Welch of McLeansboro; two brothers, Clayton Jones and wife Sharon of Nixa, Mo., and Ralph Jones of McLeansboro; three grandchildren, Justin Cantrell and wife Seasha of West Frankfort, Jonathan Cantrell of Salt Lake City and Madelyn Cantrell of McLeansboro; one great-grandchild, Makena Grace Cantrell; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation was held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Funeral service was held 12 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Harre Funeral Home with Sister Ruby McDowell officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McLeansboro. She was born March 3, 1937, in Dale, the daughter of John Leslie "Pete" Johnson and Thelma Jewel (Satterfield) Johnson. She married Eldon Ray Nalley who preceded her in death in 1993. She married Ralph W. "Fuzz" Aydt who preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2005. She was a homemaker and loved to fish, crochet, read and play cards. She is survived by three daughters, Sherree "Sissy Joe" Hankins and husband Bud of Eldorado, Melinda Kay Nalley and special friend Robin Wilce and Lee Ann Page and husband Bruce Allan of McLeansboro; one son, Gary Ray Nalley and wife Debbie of McLeansboro; two brothers, Dewaine Johnson and wife Joan of McLeansboro and Danny Johnson and wife Sandy of McLeansboro; one daughter-in-law, Vickie Nalley of Marion; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. MONTICELLO [mdash] Joel Kevin Lasswell, 82, of Monticello, formerly of Cottage Hills, passed away at 8:36 a.m., Monday, January 16, 2017 at the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello. Joel was born on April 14, 1934 in Walpole, the son of Palmer J. and Vacle McGill Lasswell. He was married to Carol Marie Pryor, Johnnie Letrice Sellers Powell and Judy Fay Manis. Survivors include his children: Yolonda Marie Butcher and husband David of Radford, VA, Joel Edwin Lasswell and wife Dorenda of Tuscola, Terry Wain Lasswell and wife Lisa of Cottage Hills, Shawn Thomas Lasswell and wife Kim of Alton and Mary Louise Lasswell of Granite City, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, brothers: Palmer Johnson Lasswell of Godfrey, James Cody Lasswell of TX and John Can Lasswell of Centralia. He was preceded in death by his son: Brett Alan Lasswell of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, grandson: Cpl. Shawn Thomas Lasswell, Jr. of Cottage Hills, siblings: Byron Ellsworth Lasswell, George Logan Lasswell, Grace Elizabeth Coale, Norma Dee Rummerfield and Leda Eileen Russell. Joel owned and operated the Bright Spot and Riverside Restaurant in Alton during the 1960s and worked as a Locomotive Engineer at Granite City Steel for 33 years. He was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge and he was a US Army veteran. His hobbies were genealogy and he loved to travel the highways off the beaten path. Joel also loved to receive picture postcards. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held in the spring. Burial will be in the Hebron Cemetery in Hamilton County. He was born March 21, 1953 in Hamilton County, Illinois to Dwight D. and Norma Jean (Allen) Farris. He was a farmer, a self employed businessman and the current road commissioner of Mayberry Township. He married the mother of his children, Vonnie Owings. He is survived by two sons; Quentin (Rashel) Farris of Norris City, IL and Clifford Farris of Harker Heights, TX. Two daughters; Amanda Farris of Norris City, IL and Heather (Ethan) Jones of Norris City, IL. He also survived by several brothers and sisters; Alan Farris of East Peoria, IL, Charlie Farris of Peoria, IL, Tommy Storey of Mt Vernon, IL, Reba French of Mt Vernon, IL, Judy Farris of St. Louis, MO, Susie Nichols of Mt. Vernon, IL, Dixie Tucker of San Clemente, CA, Diana Bowman of Pekin, IL and Pammy MacPhee of McLeansboro, IL. Seven grandchildren also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Farris were held Monday, January 16, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Keith Chuck Belcher officiating. He will be laid to rest in Albion Cemetery near Norris City. Visitation was held Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. COLLINSVILLE [mdash] William "Bill" Thomas Pemberton, 70, formerly of McLeansboro, IL, was born on October 12, 1946 and passed away on December 24, 2016 in Collinsville, IL. He graduated from McLeansboro Township High School in 1964. Bill enlisted in the Navy and reported for duty on January 13, 1966. He served in the Vietnam war as a Medic. He was honorably discharged in May 1970. After his return to the U.S., he met and married the love of his life, Judith Rose (Hawn) on August 8, 1970 in Sioux Falls, SD. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1977. He retired from St. Luke's in 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his parents, Russell and Lula (Elder) Pemberton; and two brothers, Roland and John. He is survived by sisters Phyllis Greer of Carbondale, IL., Audrey Warrick of New Harmony, IN, and Mary Braun of Evansville, IN; his devoted daughter, Jill (Richard) Korte of Collinsville, IL.; granddaughter Ashley (Justin) Parnell; grandson, Adam (Shaylee) Arras; great grandsons Wesley and Maxton; stepson Steven Lund of New York, NY as well as several nieces and nephews. A private ceremony will be held in Sioux Falls, SD in the Spring. Memorial contributions may be made to The National Kidney Foundation.

Visitation was held 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro with prayer service at 7 p.m. Funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at St. Clement's Catholic Church in McLeansboro with Father Slawomir Ptak officiating. Burial was at St. Clements Catholic Cemetery in McLeansboro. He was born Aug. 7, 1930, in East St. Louis, the son of Alvin M. Mayberry and Helen Josephine (Sanicki) Mayberry. He married Janice Halley and she passed away on Oct. 7, 2005. He was a carpenter and worked in construction. He was a member of St. Clements Catholic Church in McLeansboro. He had a passion for working on cars and served in the U.S. Army during Korean Conflict. He is survived by sons, Aaron Evrard and wife Trena of Effingham, Myron Evrard and wife Patty of Marion and Gerald Mayberry and wife Suzanne of Zionsville, Ind.; daughter, Kayla Ham and husband Rodney of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren, Daniel and Lacy Evrard, Hannah Knox and husband Tyler, Logan and Shayna Ham, Brandon Evrard and wife Jordan, April Buchanan and husband Paul and Rachel and Renee Evrard; great-grandchildren, Faye and Finn Evrard and Paul, Casandra, Evan, Rebecca and Leah Buchanan; brother, Joe Mayberry of McLeansboro; sister-in-law, Phyllis Mayberry of Mt. TERRE HAUTE [mdash] Ruth Marie Johnson, 98, passed away at 1:29 p.m. on January 8, 2017 at Bethesda Gardens in Terre Haute, IN. Ruth was born January 4, 1919 in McLeansboro, IL. She was the daughter of Frank and May (Hart) Hensley. Ruth was one of seven siblings; brothers Clyde, Carl and John and sisters Thelma Pritchett, Mary Ann Chapman and Dorthy Lou Hammons. Ruth was a resident of McLeansboro for 84 years and a resident of Terre Haute for 14. She married Charles Eugene "Gene" Johnson on October 20, 1939. They were married for 63 years. Ruth and Gene had two sons, Michael E. Johnson and Robert R. "Bob" Johnson. Ruth was preceded in death by her son Bob Johnson who died at age 39 in 1988, leaving his widow, Nancy (Peterson) Johnson. Ruth's husband Gene died in 2003 at age 86. Ruth is survived by her son Mike Johnson and wife Alice (Zimmerman) Johnson of Terre Haute, IN. Ruth has three grandsons; Robb A. Johnson and wife Kim (Kaiser) of Terre Haute, Dr. Paul M. Johnson and wife Kyoko (Nakamura) of Brighton, MI and Branden K. Johnson and wife Nikki (Ho) of Bloomington, IN. She has five great grand children: Levi, Kaia, Luke, Quinn and Max, ages 11 to 18. One sister, Mary Ann Chapman of Lafayette, IN also survives. Ruth was a member of the First Baptist Church of McLeansboro, where she sang in the choir and played the organ and piano. She also played and sang at churches, funerals, and a few times on The Baptist Hour radio program. When she moved to Terre Haute, she attended Oregon Baptist Church. Ruth enjoyed playing golf & bowling with friends and family. In her later years she attended Rend Lake College and Southern Illinois University planning to become a teacher. Funeral services will be held at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, IL at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. Visitation will start at 10:00 a.m. and go until the time of service. The Rev. Leland Widick will officiate. Burial will follow at The I.O.O.F. Cemetery in McLeansboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of McLeansboro or the Oregon Baptist Church of Terre Haute, IN and will be accepted at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. He was born June 29, 1938, in East St. Louis, the daughter of Leo Clarence Aydt and Frieda (Roesch) Aydt. He married Bernice Leona Kirsch on May 30, 1961 in Piopolis. He worked as a supervisor at General Tire. He was a member of St. Clements Catholic Church, McLeansboro. He loved to read and study genealogy; loved history and was an avid antique collector; loved square dancing and loved the 4th of July! He served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by Bernice (Kirsch) Aydt of McLeansboro; three daughters, Anita Koontz and husband Doug of Belleville, Janet Witteried and husband Pete of St. Louis, Cynthia Bowling and husband Vince of Herrin; two sons, Steven Aydt of Belleville and Wayne Aydt of Johnston City; five grandsons, Jeremy Koontz, Andrew Koontz, Matthew Bowling, Zachary Bowling and Anthony Bowling; two granddaughters, Trista Giubardo and husband Tony and Keara Witteried; one great-granddaughter, Evelyn Marie Giubardo; and his beloved cat Felix. PEORIA [mdash] PEORIA—Bert D. Barnett, 88 passed away December 6, 2016 at Grand View Alzheimer's Special Care Center at 9:15 p.m. He was born December 29, 1927, in Hamilton County, the son of Herman and Cleonia Barnett. He married Wanda Mitchell in McLeansboro, IL on July 28, 1951. He was a retired school teacher, having taught at Pleasant Valley, Washington Grade School, Wilder-Waite, Pioneer Junior High, and at Banner Elementary before he retired June 3rd, 1987. Bert loved working in his garden and growing fruit trees, blackberry bushes, and grapes. He always loved playing the guitar, banjo and singing and was a member of the "Over the Hill Gang". He also joined in the Forest Park Bluegrass "jam" sessions for many years, and loved telling jokes. He also was an avid reader. Bert served in the Navy in WW II and was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Bradley University in 1962. His is survived by his wife, Wanda, of Peoria, IL, four daughters, Brenda (Larry) Pearson, Gaila (Gary) Morris, Marilyn (Bob) Schultz and Carolyn Gallagher, two brothers, Herman Barnett and Carl (Connie) Barnett, eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren and nephews and nieces. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral services were December 10th, 2016 with Tim Beddingfield officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hawley Cemetery, Peoria, Illinois.
